This is a quick icebreaker that you can use at the start of any group. You can also use it in the middle of a group if you have some rowdy group members that are having trouble focusing. Here’s how it goes…
Ask a volunteer to start by saying the number 1. The person next to them will say 2, and the next person will say 3. When you get to the number 4 or any number that is a multiple of 4, the group member should clap instead of saying the number. Here is an example of how it should go: 1, 2, 3, clap, 5, 6, 7, clap, 9, 10, 11, clap… and so on.
You can turn this into a competition- if the group member says the number instead of clapping, he/she is out! You can also change it up at times by having the group members stomp, jump, etc. (instead of clapping) and by changing the number after each “round” (i.e. multiples of 5 in the second “round”). Let’s see how well they are paying attention and how well they can follow instructions!
